Statistics glossary (hold, break, conversion…)

Quick reminders of the ultimate concepts used in the charts and rankings.

Hold
Point scored by the team starting on offense (the team receiving the pull). This is the "expected" outcome of a point.
Break
Point scored by the team starting on defense (the team throwing the pull). Every break swings the score margin: it is the main way to win a game.
Hold % (offensive conversion)
Holds ÷ points started on offense. Measures how well the O-line converts its possessions. Around 70-80% at a good level.
Break % (defensive conversion)
Breaks ÷ points started on defense. Measures how efficiently the D-line gets the disc back and scores.
Breaks made / conceded per match
Average number of breaks made (on defense) or conceded (on offense) per game. For breaks conceded, lower is better.
Universe point
Deciding point played at a tie (e.g. 14-14 in a game to 15): whoever wins the point wins the game. One-point wins fall into the "Universe" category.
USAU rating
Iterative rating (USA Ultimate / Berenito algorithm) accounting for opponent strength and score margin. Beating a strong team earns more.
Win % (Laplace)
(W+1) ÷ (W+L+2): a smoothed win rate, more stable than the raw rate when a team has played few games.
Sample (n)
Number of observations behind a value. Greyed-out cells or ⚠ markers have too small an n: interpret with care.
Connection (duo)
Point scored from a teammate's assist: the thrower → receiver duo is counted.
